How IFTA works in Ontario
Ontario is a member of the International Fuel Tax Agreement. Canadian and U.S. carriers licensed under IFTA report Ontario fuel tax distance and fuel purchases on quarterly returns filed with their base jurisdiction.
Ontario-based carriers typically work with the Ontario Ministry of Finance for IFTA licensing and filing. U.S.-based carriers include Ontario on returns filed in their home state.
Cross-border U.S.–Ontario operations
Common corridors include Michigan–Ontario, New York–Ontario, and Manitoba–Ontario routes. Every qualified mile in Ontario must be recorded with trip detail. Border crossings make accurate jurisdiction splits especially important.

Ontario mileage and fuel records
- Trip detail showing Ontario segments (kilometers or miles per your filing method)
- Total Ontario distance for the quarter
- Fuel purchased in Ontario with receipt support
- Consistent conversion if your logs use miles but filings use kilometers
Miles vs kilometers
Canadian jurisdictions may use kilometers in official filings while U.S. drivers often log miles. Use a consistent conversion method throughout the quarter and document your approach. Inconsistent unit mixing is a common reporting error for cross-border carriers.
How IFTAfy helps with Ontario miles
IFTAfy tracks jurisdiction mileage—including Ontario—on cross-border trips, organizes fuel receipts, and supports quarterly IFTA report review on mobile and web.
